stilling fallen leaves

The rain
came
today
in the lull of war,
a Lover missed.
She approached
in quiet gray
and I, turning,
fell startled
for the sudden shock
of kisses beyond numbering,
pinning these dry, fragile leaves
to the ground.
Now, spent of her brief
affections,
the sky smiles in light relief
and I stand stronger—
a tree stripped
on the brink of winter,
poised to survive.
