dry wood burning

the trial’s fire
took easily
for the wood was dry

the wind alone
spread the flame
from his sleepless eye
to all languishing I’s

the lush tree
by the river
and in the river’s God
was taken

down and placed
atop the Head—
limbs pruned,
leaves shed,
alight but not consumed—
and human pride
was shaken
by the sacrifice
of innocence—
a life spent of tears
for those who have ears to hear—

and now there is nothing to fear
for all that remains is to abide
