a picture of protest

Last night the cottonwood seeds
gathered in creases; the seam
between the green field
and the black path
collected Nature’s pennies
as throw-away gifts,
sown but unrooted,
spent for spilled toothpicks.

and the protesters downtown
failed to take the bridge;
they amassed in pockets for some hours
as the yawning wind blew them blue
down the walled street
but tomorrow only one or two
will remain stuck
to a blade of browning grass
by the howling lake
