You may be a pastor of a large church, but you will never be anything else to God but his little lamb. Don’t take yourself too seriously, little lamb.
You may be a best-selling author, but you will never be anything else to God but a small, bleating, spotted lost sheep. Do not become puffed up.
In truth, Jesus our Master is the only one who reserves the right to wear more than one hat. Only he can be the Lamb, the Shepherd, and the Gate. He is also the Priest, sacrificing himself. It is because of this that he can be Everything. We, on the other hand, are not Everything. We will never be anything but his little lambs. Let us daily remember to be so.
The fact is: we prefer to shepherd. Shepherds are in control, lambs are witless. Lambs must go where they are told, otherwise harm may come to them. But this is humbling, being commanded. We would rather be The Commanders.
You are not a Commander. Do not succumb to the temptation to give orders to another fellow lamb. Just be a fellow lamb and let Jesus do the commanding. Should others follow you, it is only because they are following your example as a fellow lamb, not because you are such a glorious shepherd. You are not the shepherd. He is the shepherd. If he asks you, like Peter, to feed his sheep, he does not ask you to stop being a lamb; he simply has found a way to enable lambs to feed each other. Remember, he can do even the impossible. That is what makes him such an extraordinary shepherd and you more than just an ordinary lamb.
