if celebrating the new year feels more like an act of faith than an expression of gratitude

Maybe the new year presents itself to you more as challenge than promise. Maybe you’re facing difficulties with health or finances. Maybe your job situation feels like a dead-end. Maybe a strained relationship wears on your heart as the new year arrives.

For some, the new year heralds hope; for others, it quickens worry. While others welcome a new life into the world, still others mourn the recent passing of a loved one. The latter may face the new year wondering how they are going to carry on without that special someone.

Celebration on new year’s eve sometimes feels more like an act of faith than an expression of gratitude.

If this is you, know that you are not alone. And feed on these words:

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

“Come to me, all you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.”

“Do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow has enough care of its own. Seek first the kingdom of God.”

The Lord is my shepherd.
The Lord is my shepherd.
The Lord is my shepherd.
The Lord is my shepherd.

“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”

Carry on, hold your head high, stand up strong and put your shoulders back. You can face this. You can face this. Carry on, even if you have to cry.
